The Climate Changes in Australia are not the only ones who call in weather alerts. It seems that the world is changing drastically. In 2007 there was an assessment report released that said:
• A Warming of the climate system is unequivocal
• Humans are very likely to be causing most of the warming that has been experienced since 1950
• It is very likely that changes in the global climate system will continue well into the future, and that they will be larger than those seen in the recent past.
• These changes have the potential to have a major impact on human and natural systems throughout the world including Australia.
Also today we are dealing with dangerous dryness. In the South of Australia and Victoria they are preparing for catastrophic fire condition. Temperatures predicted to go into the 40s so emergency services are warned to get out early or risk death defending their homes
On the other side of the world there are alarm bells ringing as well. In the Netherlands temperatures are declining down till minus 15 degrees. It was a long time ago that the Netherlands experienced such a skein winter. There are weather alerts and alarms going of to stay home.
Well, there are many people that were ignoring all the changes, including me. But this really is shocking me!!! There are so many news reports and articles written about the climate changes, that is why I always thought; it is not up to me to change something. But it is!!! If everybody keeps thinking so easy about this than the whole situation will keep on getting way worse and worse!! We need to:
• Switch to a green energy provider
• Use energy-saving light bulbs - they use 80 per cent less electricity and last 12 times longer than ordinary bulbs.
• Turn off your lights when you leave a room and turn off electrical appliances at the mains. Standby can use between 30 and 70 per cent of the energy used when an appliance is on.
• Turn down your central heating thermostat – lowering the temperature by just a degree can cut 10 per cent off energy bills.
• When replacing electrical appliances make sure that you buy the most energy-efficient model.
• Insulate your wall cavities and fit aluminium foil behind your radiators.
• Only boil the water that you need for your cup of tea. If everyone boiled just the water they needed, the energy saved could power more than three-quarters of the UK’s streetlights.
• Recycle – landfills are the second largest source of methane emission in the UK. Most local councils provide facilities for you to recycle your paper, cardboard, bottles, cans and plastic.
• Climate change is a global problem that needs a global solution. You can join with others in speaking out. http://www.tearfund.org/Campaigning/Climate+change+and+disasters/Lifestyle+actions.htm
So stop being selfish and living in denial but do something, it all starts with yourself!!!
