Hey, why not make soccer large in Australia? What are you waiting for? It’s a beautiful game; it’s the world greatest game. Forget about rugby and cricket, it’s time to play soccer like the big guys in Europe and the rest of the world do.

I am aware of that there are a lot of other Aussie sports that are more popular and that the country doesn’t really have a large soccer culture like many countries in Europe and in other parts of the world have. But I think that all that can be changed if Australia gets to be the host of the World Cup in 2018 or 2022.

The Socceroos are in my opinion a really good team, with a lot of talented players that are stars in famous clubs in Europe. The national team has also performed very well in large international soccer tournaments and the Socceroos are also qualified for the World Cup in South Africa next year. So you’ll see, there are really good soccer potential in this country, which can be evolved and become even greater.

I hope that the country gets the chance to arrange the World Cup, because it will for sure boost the interest for soccer, especially among the youth population. Just see how the game grew in the U.S after they hosted the tournament in 1994, the same can happen here. If you’ll see it from an economical perspective it is a really big benefit to host the tournament, since it is the largest sport event in the world and there are billions of people who are watching the matches.

So come on all people, politicians and soccer fans let us bring the soccer culture down under!

Or what do you guys think?

Hm, the world cup could be a good chance for your team making the sport even more popular in Australia. Oh no! I forgot, they are in a group with Germany... Ghana and Serbia are strong teams as well, so they'll need a couple of lucky days I guess. But couldn't a surprise be the biggest chance to increase soccer's position in the Australian sports charts?!

Wohoo Socceroo
Yes, I totally agree, football aka soccer is just great! It's fast and captivating, the rules are easy to learn and to remember (even for us girls) and it's played all over the world, unlike Cricket or Aussie rules football or rugby even. I say let Oz host the World Cup and make football large in Oz! Go Socceroos!!

The name of the game: Football
Good point John, as always. I think its called soccer now but I hope it will change to football in the future. However, one thing is for sure, it would never be called RUGBY!!
Man John Posted on the 6th October 2009 Report this post
soccer
What would soccer then be called in Australia? Would it be 'soccer' or football?
Man John Posted on the 16th September 2009 Report this post
Soccer
Another stance on this must surely be to add that if Football was indeed more popular in Australia, this would then be aired on TV thus reducing the amount of Australian produced TV-shows to the betterment of all of us.

Footballll!
It would be a tremendous achievement if Australia could get football on the same level as rugby. No only a great source of revenue, it's a fantastic sport and a great addition to any country's sport repertoire.

Football!
I think football in Australia is getting there with extra teams being added to the A-League and growing popularity with high profile players and entry to the World Cup should see a healthier support base. We all need to get along to the national games and show our support. Who knows we might even see people referring to the game as it should be - FOOTBALL not soccer :)

It is happening!
Hi Tommy. If you look at the growth in the popularity of Soccer in Australia over recent years, I think you will be encouraged. The Socceroos have already lead the charge and will hopefully do very well in 2010. The new league in Australia is proving a great success. Keep the faith!
